About the data
Capacity utilization is the ratio of announced attendance to listed hockey-configuration arena capacity. NHL teams routinely report standing-room ticket sales above seated capacity, which is why several teams average over 100%.
DMA Rank is a measure of a team's home market size by total TV households — potential market size, not actual hockey viewership. US teams use the Nielsen Designated Market Area (DMA) ranking; Canadian teams use a Numeris CMA-equivalent rank, slotted into the same household-count scale for cross-border comparison. New York is #1; smaller numbers indicate larger markets. Comparing DMA Rank to attendance shows whether a team is punching above or below its market's structural ceiling.
Median Household Income on team detail pages is the metro-area median in USD (Canadian values converted from CAD at the current exchange rate). All values are estimates pending a Census/StatsCan ingestion script.
Franchise Value is Forbes' most recent published valuation of each NHL franchise, shown in USD. Forbes publishes their NHL Valuations list annually each December; values reflect total franchise worth including arena revenue, broadcast deals, and on-ice performance.
Arena Rating is the aggregate Google Maps user rating of the team's home arena (out of 5), with the raw count of reviews underneath. It captures the lived in-arena experience — concourse layout, food quality, seat comfort, customer service — from the people who actually showed up. Refreshes weekly.
Wikipedia pageviews (30 days) measures unique-article interest in each franchise on the English Wikipedia and serves as a proxy for off-season and casual fan interest.
Data is refreshed daily for attendance and weekly for digital metrics. Reddit subscriber counts will be added when API access is approved.
