2027 NHL Draft FAQ
When is the 2027 NHL Draft?
The 2027 NHL Entry Draft is expected to take place in late June 2027. The exact dates and host city will be confirmed by the NHL closer to the event. The draft consists of seven rounds held over two days.
How does the NHL Draft work?
The NHL Draft is an annual event where teams select eligible prospects — typically 18-year-old players from junior, college, and international leagues. The draft order is determined by a combination of regular-season standings (for non-playoff teams) and a draft lottery. Teams with worse records get higher odds at the top pick. Each team starts with one pick per round across seven rounds (224 total picks), though picks are frequently traded between teams.
Who is the projected #1 pick in the 2027 NHL Draft?
Landon DuPont (D, Michigan) currently tops our big board for the 2027 NHL Draft. Rankings shift throughout the season as prospects develop, so check the big board for the latest.
How many rounds are in the NHL Draft?
The NHL Draft has seven rounds. With 32 teams, that produces 224 selections per draft (plus any compensatory picks). Historically, first-round picks have the highest success rate, but NHL stars like Henrik Zetterberg (7th round) and Datsyuk (6th round) have been found throughout the draft.
What is NHLe (NHL equivalency)?
NHLe — NHL equivalency — is a stat that translates a prospect's scoring from their current league into an estimated NHL-level production rate. Different leagues have different conversion factors: for example, OHL points convert at roughly 0.30, while SHL points convert higher because it's a professional league. NHLe helps compare prospects playing in vastly different leagues and competition levels.
What do the draft tiers mean?
Our tier system groups prospects by projected draft range to help scouts and fans quickly identify where a player is expected to go. Elite (Tier 1) prospects are projected top-5 picks. Top 15 (Tier 2) are likely first-round selections. Late 1st Round (Tier 3) could go in the late 20s or early 30s. 2nd Round (Tier 4) covers picks 33-64. Rounds 3-4 (Tier 5) and Rounds 5-7 (Tier 6) represent later-round fliers with upside.
